Effective wipers are crucial for clear visibility, no matter if its morning due or heavy rain. If your wipers are streaking and screeching, you’re at risk of poor visibility and potential distractions. Replacing old and worn noisy wipers is a cheap way to get you on the road again.
Wiper refills are a practical choice since they replace only the worn rubber strip, not the entire wiper blade. Here’s how to get started with buying and fitting UNIWIPER refills:
Step 1: Finding the Correct Wiper Refills
This is the hardest part of it all. Finding and purchasing refills that match your blade’s dimensions and profile, its not just the width and length to worry about, the wiper profile also must match so it can be tricky if you dont know what profile you have because they dont have names or part numbers printed on them. Ensure the width matches to avoid fitting issues or exposing the metal frame. If they have metal spines, then check the spines after every drive to ensure they do not dislodge incase they were not installed properly.
Tools You’ll Need:
- Combined pliers
- Stanley knife
- Flat-head screwdriver
Step 2: Disengage the Wiper Blade from the Wiper Arm
Removing the wiper blade from the wiper arm gives you more freedom to work. Follow these steps:
- Pull the wiper arm away from the windscreen until it stands upright.
- Turn the wiper blade 90 degrees to the wiper arm.
- Pinch the tab on the connector and slide the wiper blade down to disconnect it, careful not to apply excess pressure otherwise it will bend and deform the metal spine.
- Carefully lay the wiper arm back on the windscreen.
Step 3: Remove the Old Blade Refill
- Locate the metal reinforcing clip at the end of the rubber blade and push it in with pliers to release the rubber strip.
- Slide out the rubber strip with the metal spine on each side.
- Save the metal spine for the new refill, refill must be the same profile to use the same metal spine
Step 4: Insert the New Refill in Your Wiper Blade
- Insert the metal spine into the profile of your new refill.
- Ensure the refill follows the curve of the wiper blade.
- Slide the refill under the blade claws and push it back under the retaining clip.
- Trim any excess refill length.
- Push back the metal reinforcing clips to secure the blade.
Step 5: Reinstall the Wiper Blade onto the Wiper Arm
- Open the tab connector and slide the wiper blade onto the wiper arm until it locks.
- Ensure the connection is firm.
- Lay the wiper back on the windscreen.
- Test your wipers to ensure they work smoothly and silently.
If your wipers still make noise, try polish the glass with a good glass polish.
